UPDATE: Marine Killed on Base Was Beaten to Death

A Marine is being held as a suspect in the death of Lance Cpl. Mario Arias.

 

A Marine killed over the weekend on Camp Pendleton was beaten to death, according to a Naval Criminal Investigation Service spokesman. A suspect is in custody.

Lance Cpl. Mario Arias, 19, of Canoga Park was an air crew trainee from Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303 of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Aug. 23, 2010.

A second Marine was found outside the barracks after jumping from a third-story balcony, according to the NCIS. He was being treated for his injuries and held as a homicide suspect.

The suspect's name has not been released pending the filing of charges.
